CATCH UP: VanIves

How would you describe your creative mode right now?

It's been intense then sparse, We are so used to working in the same room so writing music separately is a new challenge. There is so much cultural and political news at the moment that we've felt it was best to take a days off at a time to learn, reflect and act. It's so hard to be creative when you're head is in the wrong place. We often get asked to play covers in social situations and its pretty funny cause we always say 'I only know our tunes'. We've been creative in this aspect over lockdown as we've been learning and then making 'Cover videos' in our own style and putting them on Facebook and Instagram. Its crazy how much you learn from dissecting someone elses work.

What has been keeping you entertained during lockdown?

We all miss socialising so much, we've been very active with groupchats and group games. If you have'nt played Skribble with your friends online i'd highly recommend it! Now that lockdown is loosened as well we've been meeting up at our local skate spot and skating in the sun which has been so good for the soul.

It feels like music has played a big part for everyone during lockdown, what's your ultimate feel-good track and/or album that you keep coming back to, and why?

Bruno Major released his tune - The most beautiful thing, which has been on repeat! I also discovered 'Roll deep - Shake a leg' which is just so fun, definately makes me laugh when I need it. Can't wait to get back to a clubnight and shake a leg!

How was your experience at the SAMAs last October?

It was a total suprise that we won best newcomer, If anything it brought us closer to musicians in Scotland, since the SAMA's we've wrote and worked with some of the other nominations, (something we've learned since SAMA's, just reach out to people who inspire you, local or not, they usually want to work with you). We feel the SAMA's is a brilliant award ceremony and we're just super excited to see who's being brought to the limelite next year and reach out to more amazing acts in Scotland.

Once the situation normalises, what are you looking forward to doing first?

OOOOOH pretty selfish, but, we had a few sessions and videos we were going to shoot with some super talented musicians, so getting that back on track. We had a bunch of shows lined up also, can't wait to get them rescheduled and be back in venues playing our new music. Also anything that gets all our mates/family back together, wether its gigs, playing basketball, skating, drinks. We'll definately be going back to normality with a fresh look on whats important and what we need to feel happy.

Have you got any upcoming events or releases you would like to plug?

We released a new Single called 'Babyshowers' which is the first track from a new bunch of music we're putting out, We have a new song being released next month as well called 'Heartstuck' which is the result of late night experimenting. As we don't know when lockdown will be over and shows back on, we're going to be releasing music pretty consistently till its over. So keep an eye out for it and when lockdown is over come see us live because were going to throw 110% at a run of Live shows and make something really special, immerisive and fun as fuck.
