1. Damn Dirty Duke - Total Organisation
Beginning as an art installation that featured synths; props and self-shot film, Total Organization is Damn Dirty Dukes inaugural release to the world. The frantic, art-punk nature of the song is as intriguing as the slower, more melodic aspects. Letting fuzz laden bass guitar take the lead while the duo swap vocal duties, Damn Dirty Duke display their skills with a simple but greatly effective track.
2. Double Discone - Espace
Landing on the scene all the way from France, Double Discone are armed with an army of analouge synths, drum machines and a keen ear for producing some raw electro music. New track, ‘Escape’ is as if the duo are channelling Homework-era Daft Punk without breaking a sweat. Pulsating synths transfix as the bassline acts as an anchor for the entire track.
3. Empress - Aye Ok Then
Glasgow MC Empress’s new single ‘Aye Ok Then’ acts as a middle finger to all those who look down and berate. The sparse instrumentation of the track allows her to take centre stage and show those people what she thinks of their invalid opinion.
4. Kitti - Chasing the Crowd
Singer/songwriter Kitti is quickly establishing herself as one to watch with her refreshing soul infused pop. Gathering influences from Amy Winehouse, Jorja Smith and Florence and the Machine to create her debut single ‘Chasing the Crowd’, the track is a meditation on the societal faced by young woman today. With a slot at this year's Tenement Trail, Kitti will no doubt be the artist on everyone's lips for days.
5. Megan Black - Wooden Women
Singer/songwriter Megan Blacks new single ‘Wooden Woman’ is a strong, brooding track that burns with a fiery intent. Holding it down with her enchanting vocal performance, the backing band provides a steady flow of rhythm and flourishes of lead guitar.
6. MOY - Aeon Island
Stepping onto the scene with a brand of lush indie-pop, the New Zealand-born/Glasgow-based newcomer MOY has dropped a follow-up to his debut single. ‘Aeon Island’ is a cacophony of melody. With the main motif being built upon as the song progresses, the artist brings it to an end with incredible grace. Catch MOY at Tenement Trail this year at the St Lukes Stage.
7. North Atlas - South
Scottish alternative rock trio, North Atlas are back with bigger ambitions than ever with their new track ‘South’. Coating a Barrowlands-sized chorus around tightly produced verses, the trio use their unique vision to set themselves apart from the rest. The relentless drum and bass combination atop singer Leon Hunter’s commanding presence makes for an engaging listen that will no doubt catch the public’s attention in a matter of time.
8. Paque - Impatient
With a dominating voice and a flow to match, Paque is a presence in Scottish hip-hop that cannot, and will not, be ignored. The Congolese-born artist has dropped a fresh new track in the form of ‘Impatient’. Backed by a groovy beat, Paque’s smoky vocal performance is incredibly engaging, having already caught the attention of UK legend Giggs in the past.
9. Petrichor - Valdo
The latest project from Glasgow-based DJ/producer Simon Stokes, Petrichor have released a brand new LP. Lead single ‘blota’ is a lush yet pounding techno track that combines the nostalgia of artists like Laurent Garnier with a more ambient angle. Its all encompassing layers would fit happily in the hallowed grounds of Sub Club as well as the international stages of dance festivals around the world.
10. The Boy With The Lion Head - Blind
Since the debut LP dropped in 2015, The Boy With The Lion Head have garnered attention through their powerful mix of atmospheric guitars and somber melodies. In anticipation of their upcoming record, the band have released ‘Blind’ as the lead single. A track that is melancholic in its instrumentation but incredibly insightful with its lyrics. Burning slow throughout, ‘Blind’ is a stunning representation of what The Boy… can do.
